What is vulvo-vaginal atrophy?

Vulvo - vaginal atrophy is a condition of the vaginal and vulva that results from thinning, dryness and inflammation of the vaginal walls due to low estrogen levels.  Estrogen levels decline as you get closer to menopause, and continue to decline into the post-menopausal years.  Women who have had breast cancer and have been treated with  certain medications, or women who have been breastfeeding for long periods of time may also experience symptoms due to low estrogen levels.  These symptoms can include:

  • Discomfort or pain during sex
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Vaginal sensation of burning, which women describe as a “sandpaper” like sensation.
  • Increases in bladder infections
  • Leakage of urination
  • Urinary urgency, or the feeling of having to go all the time.
  • Uncomfortable genital itching

What is MonaLisa Touch and how does it work?

MonaLisa Touch uses a laser to resolve many vaginal and urinary issues that women struggle with while due to low estrogen states. 

The MonaLisa Touch delivers gentle laser energy vaginal and vulvar tissue and stimulates your body’s own healing mechanisms to revitalize the cells in the vagina and vulva.  This stimulation creates  more collagen, increases blood flow, adds thickness and strength to the skin, restores moisture and improves the pH.  A typical course of treatment is 3 procedures over a 12 weeks.  Some women experience a significant amount of improvement after the initial treatment, and even greater improvement after treatments 2 and 3.

To find out if you are a good candidate for the MonaLisa Touch, call the office and we'll send you a questionnaire that you can fill out and Dr. Limosnero will personally evaluate prior to a visit.   If you are a good candidate, then we can schedule you a consultation visit. 

The MonaLisa Touch Process:

  1. Fill out the questionnaire to see if you a good candidate for the procedure
  2. Joy from Roots Integrative Gynecology will be contacting you to let you know if you are a candidate for the procedure. 
  3. If you are a candidate Joy will schedule you an initial consultation  - if you decide to proceed with the treatment in most cases the first session can be done the same day!
  4. Schedule treatments 2 and 3, all 6 week apart
  5. Recommended maintenance:  yearly treatment.
